About OASIS Institute
The OASIS Institute is a national non-profit educational organization dedicated to
strengthening communities by engaging individuals 50 and older in lifelong learning,
health education and volunteer service programs. Last year alone, OASIS helped local
communities by providing more than 9,200 member volunteers contributing in excess of
550,000 service hours.
The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program began in 1989 and pairs volunteers age
50 and older with children in grades K-4 who have underdeveloped reading skills. The
adults work one-on-one with the students once a week throughout the school year using a
curriculum designed to build reading and language skills. OASIS works with school
districts to recruit tutors and provides program curriculum and materials.
Anheuser-Busch’s Support
Anheuser-Busch has provided funding for the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program
in St. Louis since its inception.
In commemoration of the Institute’s 25th anniversary in 2007, Anheuser-Busch also
provided the OASIS Institute with a special $100,000 one-time investment to help
expand the organization’s tutoring resources and capabilities. This $100,000 will be used
to develop a train-the-trainer pilot program and an on-line “Tutor Power” library
component, which will help the OASIS volunteer tutors more easily serve at-risk children
throughout the country.
Impact
OASIS has grown into the largest, most comprehensive education and volunteer program
for mature adults in the United States, serving more than 360,000 adults and partnering
with more than 700 community organizations in 26 cities across the country.
The OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program has grown to operate in 21 cities and
more than 100 school districts across the country. OASIS volunteers have made a
significant impact on the lives of children who previously struggled with reading in
school. In fact, 95 percent of students working with OASIS tutors showed improved
reading achievement after only one year in the program.
With Anheuser-Busch’s help, the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program in St. Louis
has grown to include 272 area schools in 33 school districts. During the 2006-2007
school year, nearly 1,900 adult volunteers in St. Louis tutored local children from
kindergarten through fourth grade.
“With Anheuser-Busch’s special gift, we’ll have even more trained adult volunteers in
the schools, keeping them healthy and giving kids K-4 the individual one-on-one
attention they need to improve their reading skills and build self-esteem.”
“This program is a positive, rewarding experience for both the adult volunteers and the
students, and it wouldn’t be possible without Anheuser-Busch’s support. Children
benefit when they have the opportunity to learn from a personal tutor, a person who cares
about them and can focus on their specific needs. Older adults who work with children
also benefit -- by staying active and engaged, and seeing the real difference they are
making in children’s lives.”
